Allow the alcohol to completely dry before bonding, should take just a couple minutes. On the inside of the bumper, there are two small circles directly opposite these points. If you look carefully at the front of the bumper, you will see two small indentations showing where holes are supposed to be drilled to mount the front license plate. Stock front license plate bracket (came with the car, not installed)įirst thing to do is remove the front bumper, I won't go into details on this, there are plenty of good posts on how to do this.Ĭlean the inside of the bumper using isopropyl alcohol where the magnets are to be bonded. Qty 4 3/4"diaX1/4" thick NdFeB Disc Magnets ($17 incl shipping) Below are instructions on how to do this, and pictures of the install. So enough about the background, what did I do? Basically, I mounted the stock front license plate bracket using magnets at the same location that you typically screw the thing on, except, I didn't have to drill any holes in the front bumper. I thought about making my own mount to fit the tow hook, but my 2005 350z has a M22 thread at the tow hook location, which is pretty non-standard, I coudn't find a bolt this size anywhere. I looked at the stillen type mount that threads into the tow hook location, but I didn't want to fork over $60, and this wasn't all that easy to remove and replace anyway. I figured that the easiest mount would be magnetic. So, I was looking for a way to mount my front license plate that I could just stick on when I parked the car at a meter, and remove it the rest of the time, therefore it had to be REALLY easy to remove and replace. However, I have gotten one warning and two tickets while parking on the street without a front license plate, apparently the meter maids really look for this. My wife and I have both been pulled over in the Z (and both gotten out of the ticket!) and neither officer has said anything about not having a front license plate. I live in Colorado and they have a front license plate law here, but it isn't very strictly enforced. There have been a few posts on other car sites about a mount like this, but I haven't seen any 350z posts, so I thought I'd throw this one into the mix. This magnetic license plate mount can be easily (really easily!) installed and removed and requires absolutely no visible modifications to the car. I wanted to tell you all about a front license plate mount that I came up with.
